Safety Tips

When it comes to travelling, every member is responsible for his or her own safety. We recommend that members follow some basic security measures outlined below.

Terms and Conditions

The Community Share-a-Lift Car Share Scheme (the "Scheme") provides a journey sharing information service enabling members to make contact with each other for the purpose of sharing car, cycling, public transport, taxi or walking journeys.

The service is facilitated through an externally hosted website and database (the "Website"), developed for Staffordshire County Council, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and partner organisations by Jambusters Ltd (collectively "We", "Us", "Our"). The Website is accessed at

Frequently Asked Questions

What is community car sharing?

It is when two or more people, who are making a similar journey, decide to travel together in one car rather than separately. It is aimed at getting vehicles off the roads by increasing the number of people in each car and also to help people, especially if they have no access to a car, get to the shops, doctors, hospital or leisure activities, for example.

How does car sharing work?

Once you have completed the registration form your details will be entered into the database, and a 'post' of your anonymised offer or request will then be visible. If someone wishes to see further details for a trip that may be a good match, they must register on the system and be logged in. From the details it is then up to you to contact each other and formulate a car share agreement that is convenient to you all.

You do not have to over commit yourself at this stage. One option is to set a trial period and a date to review the feelings of all parties. This will enable you to stop sharing at this point if the arrangement doesn't suit any or some of the parties involved.

Why should I consider car sharing?

Below are some of the many reasons:

  • reduce congestion and save valuable time
  • reduce fuel costs and parking charges
  • reduce the mileage and everyday wear and tear on your vehicle
  • reduce traffic pollution and help contain the increasing pressure on the local community and environment
  • enjoy a more sociable and less stressful way of travelling.

What about sharing costs?

If you find a method which works particularly, please email the scheme administrator with details. These can then be added to the list of suggestions.

  • On a reciprocal basis, where you drive one time and the next time your car share partner drives
  • If there is only one driver then he/she may charge their passengers for the journey: we currently recommend that 10-15p per mile is a fair contribution, plus splitting any parking fee equally, as long as you don't charge your passengers more than the running costs of the vehicle.

What about insurance?

You must be fully insured and it is advisable to inform your insurance company that you are registered in a car share scheme. This should not incur additional costs. Most insurance policies cover you to carry passengers on your journey, as long as you don't charge your passengers more than the running costs of the vehicle.

Why should my community join this scheme?

The Staffordshire Community Share-a-Lift scheme:

  • is FREE to join for all communities in the Staffordshire area
  • will display your community's logo, at no additional cost
  • covers all communities and residents in the Staffordshire area so your members are more likely to find matches.

What if I car share and have to return unexpectedly?

If you have to return unexpectedly, and are a passenger or a driver, you must contact your car share partner(s) as soon as possible so that they can make alternative arrangements. As a passenger it is also essential for you to let the driver know you are ill so that they know not to wait if you are not at your pick up point.

What happens if I find that car sharing doesn't suit me?

If you find that car sharing does not suit you, you can stop at any time.

How can I plan a journey using public transport?

Visit You can plan your journey for door to door and compare car/train/bus/plane times and distances.

If you have any more comments or questions please email the Share-a-Lift Administrator and we can include answers to any frequently asked questions for other users.
